Candidate Conservation
Candidate species are species for which there is enough information
to indicate that listing as threatened or endangered is warranted, but
preparing a listing proposal is precluded by other, higher priority
listing activities.
The focus of the Candidate Conservation program is to evaluate at-risk
species and to work with partners to conserve these species so they
do not decline to the point where they need to be listed under the
ESA.
