On Going Prescribed Burn
Projects
Mystery Creek
Prescribed Burns
The
burn projects on the Mystery Creek Road consist of multiple units that encompass
more than 5000 acres. The purposes of these burns are to increase moose habitat
and provide a fire break between the refuge and the town of Sterling.
Mystery
Creek Units 3,5 &6 vary in size from 450 to 2000 acres and are scheduled to
be burned during the summer of 2002.
These burns will most likely be lit
by aerial ignition, using a ping pong machine or a helitorch. This is the safest
way for firefighters to work in this area.
Funny River Road
Hazard
Fuel Reduction
This hazard fuel reduction project has been in the works
since 1998. The main objective is to create a shaded fuel break along the refuge
boundary to prevent the spread of catastrophic wildfire to the communities of
Funny River and Soldotna. The refuge fire program will continue to thin the roadside
and burn the piles of debris from mile 3 to mile 9.6 of the Funny River Road.
The cut logs from this project are available FREE for firewood. The logs
are cut into smaller lengths and the public is welcome to take them. Please use
caution when parking along the Funny River Road.
